Djolu is a remote town located in the Tshuapa Province in the northwestern Democratic Republic of the Congo. It lies deep in the heart of the Central African rainforest and serves as the administrative center of the eponymous territory. The region is globally recognized for its proximity to the Salonga National Park, Africa's largest tropical rainforest reserve, making Djolu a strategic location for conservation efforts. The local economy is based almost entirely on subsistence farming and the trade of forest products, as the town is difficult to access due to dense vegetation and a lack of paved roads. Historically, the area has been the site of various research missions to study bonobos, which are native to the surrounding forests. Despite its geographical isolation, Djolu plays a crucial role in monitoring illegal poaching and protecting biodiversity within the Tshuapa Basin. Living conditions in the town are defined by a lack of basic infrastructure, which has paradoxically helped preserve the pristine nature of the surrounding landscape.
