Ruins of Idalion (Cyprus)

Weather…

The ruins of Idalion, located near the modern village of Dali, preserve the remains of one of the ten ancient city-kingdoms of Cyprus. Traditionally said to have been founded by Chalcanor after the Trojan War, the city flourished between the 8th and 5th centuries BC as a major religious and administrative center. The site features twin acropolises, where significant sanctuaries dedicated to Aphrodite and Apollo have been unearthed. One of the most critical discoveries at the site is the Bronze Tablet of Idalion, which bears the longest inscription in the ancient Cypriot syllabic script and provides unique insights into ancient law and healthcare. Its strategic location in the fertile Mesaoira plain made it a crucial hub for controlling the copper trade routes from the Troodos Mountains. Idalion’s independence eventually came to an end around 470 BC when it was conquered by the Phoenician city-state of Kition with Persian support. Today, the archaeological park features a detailed view of its massive defensive walls, royal palace foundations, and intricately planned administrative buildings.
