Las Terrazas
Las Terrazas is a pioneering eco-village located within the Sierra del Rosario UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Established in the 1960s as a reforestation project, it has blossomed into a model for sustainable tourism and a tranquil escape from city life. Visitors are drawn to its serene lake, terraced hillsides, and the harmonious integration of the community with nature. The village is home to local artists and farmers, offering a unique cultural experience alongside dramatic natural beauty. Nature enthusiasts can explore numerous hiking trails or swim in the crystal-clear natural pools of the San Juan River. History buffs will appreciate the ruins of 19th-century French coffee plantations, such as Cafetal Buenavista, dotting the hills. Gastronomy here is exceptional and farm-to-table focused. The village features excellent restaurants serving traditional Cuban countryside fare, and visitors must taste the locally roasted coffee at Café de María. Getting to Las Terrazas is straightforward. It is located just off the main highway, about 45 minutes west of Havana, making it accessible by car or tour. The best time to visit is during the cooler, drier months from November to April, providing the most comfortable climate for hiking, zip-lining, and enjoying outdoor activities.
