Lugu Lake is situated at an elevation of 2,685 meters on the border between Yunnan and Sichuan provinces in China. It is renowned for its crystal-clear, deep blue waters and the memorable alpine scenery provided by the surrounding high mountains. With a maximum depth of 93.5 meters, it ranks as one of the deepest freshwater lakes in China. However, the region is most famous for being the home of the Mosuo people, an ethnic minority that maintains one of the world's last matriarchal social structures. Their culture is unique for the tradition of "walking marriages," where women are the heads of households and inheritance passes through the female line. The lake is dotted with five islands and several peninsulas, which are traditionally navigated using distinctive dugout canoes known as "pig-trough boats." Due to its historical isolation, Lugu Lake has preserved a pristine ecosystem and an ancient way of life. While modern tourism has grown recently, providing economic benefits, it also poses challenges to the preservation of the unique Mosuo cultural heritage.
