Ingonish
Ingonish is actually a series of five distinct small communities strung along the eastern coast of the Cape Breton peninsula. It is the primary eastern entrance to the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. The area features a dramatic meeting of ocean and mountains, with steep forested hills dropping directly into the Atlantic. The 1940s-built Keltic Lodge sits on the narrow Middle Head Peninsula, a prominent local landmark flanked by ocean bays. The outdoor recreation options are extensive, including the 18-hole Highland Links golf course and the sandy Ingonish Beach, where freshwater meets saltwater. Hiking is a major draw, with the Middle Head Trail offering a 3.8-kilometer loop over the rocky promontory. Fishing for lobster and snow crab remains an active part of the local economy, heavily influencing the restaurant menus. The town is a 2-hour drive from Sydney, Nova Scotia. Facilities are fully operational only from mid-May to October, with peak tourism aligning with the changing leaf colors in October. Ski Cape Smokey provides limited winter activities, featuring a modern gondola rising over 300 meters above the coastline.
