St. Andrews by-the-Sea, founded in 1783 by United Empire Loyalists, is one of Canada's oldest seaside resorts. The town center retains its original street grid and features over 280 historic buildings, some of which were floated across the bay from Castine, Maine, during the American Revolution. The primary draw for visitors is the proximity to the Bay of Fundy, home to the highest tides in the world. Whale watching tours frequently depart from the harbor, offering chances to see minke, finback, and humpback whales in the nutrient-rich waters. The Kingsbrae Garden provides 27 acres of impressive horticultural displays, while Ministers Island, accessible only at low tide, features the summer estate of railway builder Sir William Van Horne. The local culinary scene highlights fresh Bay of Fundy seafood, especially lobster and scallops, often served in historic inns along Water Street. The town is easily reached by a 90-minute drive from Saint John. The best time to visit is from June to September, when all attractions operate and whale sightings peak.
