Laughing Bird Caye
Laughing Bird Caye is an elongated island sitting on an isolated faro, an angular ring of coral reef, within the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System. Named after the laughing gull that once bred heavily on the island, it was declared a National Park in 1991 to protect its fragile marine ecosystem. The caye is completely uninhabited and features powdery white sand beaches lined with coconut palms. The surrounding crystal-clear waters provide some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving in southern Belize, with abundant marine life including nurse sharks, stingrays, and animated coral gardens. The island serves as an important habitat for various bird species, making it a dual destination for both marine enthusiasts and birdwatchers. Conservation efforts have restored much of the natural vegetation, ensuring a pristine environment. Visitors can enjoy a beach picnic under the shade of the trees, but overnight stays are strictly prohibited to maintain the park's ecological balance. Local tour operators from the mainland usually provide lunch, often featuring freshly caught seafood prepared Belizean style. Reaching the caye requires an 18-kilometer boat ride from Placencia, which takes about 30 to 45 minutes depending on sea conditions. Day trips are popular and easily arranged through dive shops and tour operators in the village. The best time to visit is during the dry season, from December to May, when water visibility is at its peak and the weather is consistently sunny. A small park fee is required, which goes directly toward marine conservation efforts.
