The Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve spans 430 square kilometers and features a stark contrast to the rest of Belize's tropical broadleaf jungle. The landscape is dominated by Honduran pines, granite boulders, and deep river valleys. This elevated area provides a cooler climate and serves as a paradise for nature lovers and hikers. Prominent highlights include the Rio On Pools, a series of natural granite basins first-rate for swimming. The Rio Frio Cave impresses with a 20-meter-high arch and an interior sandy beach. The Thousand Foot Falls is recognized as one of the highest waterfalls in all of Central America. The best time to visit is from January to April during the dry season, when the unpaved roads are in better condition. The reserve is frequently explored via guided tours originating from San Ignacio, as a 4WD vehicle is essential for navigating the rough gravel roads.
