This inland national park should not be confused with the famous marine Great Blue Hole. Covering over 230 hectares, the park is managed by the Belize Audubon Society. The centerpiece is the inland Blue Hole, a cenote formed by the collapse of an underground river channel. The sapphire-blue water is fed by the St. Herman's Cave system and provides a remarkably refreshing swim in the humid jungle climate. Just a short hike away is St. Herman's Cave. Visitors are permitted to explore the first 200 meters of this cavern unguided with flashlights, admiring the massive stalactite and stalagmite formations. For deeper explorations or the popular cave tubing excursions in the nearby Crystal Cave, a licensed local guide is mandatory. The park is located directly on the scenic Hummingbird Highway, about 20 kilometers southeast of Belmopan. It is accessible year-round, though the water in the Blue Hole can lose its characteristic clarity after heavy rains in the fall. Two short jungle trails connect the cave entrance to the swimming hole, offering excellent birdwatching opportunities along the way.
