Welchman Hall Gully (Barbados)

Weather…

Welchman Hall Gully is a panoramic natural geological formation in the heart of Barbados, created by the collapse of a massive limestone cave network. This deep gully is home to a lush tropical secondary forest featuring over 200 species of exotic plants, including massive bamboo groves and ancient nutmeg trees. It holds a unique place in botanical history as the credited birthplace of the grapefruit, which was first documented here in the 1750s as a natural cross between a sweet orange and a pomelo. Walking through the gully, visitors can see massive stalactites still hanging from the original cave ceiling. The area is also a prime spot for viewing Barbados' wild green monkeys during their feeding times. As a protected nature reserve, it gives a glimpse into the island's primeval landscape before the colonial era of sugar cane cultivation, providing a serene and educational experience for nature lovers.
