St. Andrew's Parish Church (Barbados)

Weather…

St. Andrew's Parish Church in northern Barbados is an impressive example of Neo-Gothic ecclesiastical architecture. The present structure was completed in 1846, following the destruction of the previous church by the catastrophic Great Hurricane of 1831. Built using locally quarried coral limestone, the church is noted for its distinctive cruciform floor plan and sturdy construction, which famously allowed it to survive the severe 1898 hurricane with minimal damage. It is situated in the scenic Scotland District, a region named for its resemblance to the hilly Scottish landscape. Inside, the church features intricate woodwork and historical memorial tablets that chronicle the lives of the parish's early settlers and prominent families. The surrounding churchyard, with its old gravestones and lush tropical greenery, provides a tranquil setting for reflection. Today, it remains an active place of worship and a vital historical landmark that reflects the enduring colonial and religious heritage of the island.
