Cotton Tower Signal Station (Barbados)

Weather…

Cotton Tower Signal Station was established in 1819 as a vital link in a chain of six signal stations across Barbados. Named after Admiral Sir Charles Cotton, the tower was part of a communication system designed to transmit messages rapidly using flags and semaphores before the advent of modern technology. These stations were crucial for military coordination, reporting ship arrivals, and alerting the authorities to internal unrest. Built from sturdy local coral limestone, the tower is situated in the parish of St. Joseph on a high ridge. Its vantage point provides some of the best views on the island, overlooking the rugged beauty of the Scotland District. Today, the restored station is a protected historical landmark that allows visitors to explore the island's 19th-century colonial defense infrastructure and enjoy the surrounding tropical landscape.
