Fort Fincastle (Bahamas)

Weather…

Fort Fincastle is a historic fortress situated on Bennet's Hill, the highest point in Nassau. Built in 1793 by Lord Dunmore, the Royal Governor of the Bahamas at the time, the fort was intended to protect the town from pirate raids and potential Spanish invasions. It is celebrated for its unique architectural shape, which resembles a paddle-wheel steamer with its pointed prow facing eastward. Constructed from local limestone, the fort originally mounted two 24-pounder cannons and two 32-pounder cannons, though it never faced an actual military engagement. Its strategic position provides expansive views of Nassau, the harbor, and the surrounding cays. The site is also home to the historic Water Tower, which was added in the early 20th century. Today, Fort Fincastle serves as a significant landmark representing British colonial defensive strategy in the Caribbean.
