Djanet is a fascinating oasis city in southeastern Algeria and the administrative center of the Djanet province in the Tassili n'Ajjer mountains. The city is situated in a deep valley surrounded by spectacular sandstone formations and serves as the primary gateway to the Tassili n'Ajjer National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Djanet is predominantly inhabited by the Kel Ajjer Tuareg, whose rich cultural heritage is celebrated annually during the Sebeiba festival, which is part of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity. The oasis is famous for its more than 30,000 date palms, supplied by a traditional irrigation system. World-renowned prehistoric rock engravings are found in the surrounding area, including the famous 'Crying Cow' of Terarart. Historically, Djanet was an important outpost during the French colonial period, still reflected in some buildings and the structure of the old town. Today, Djanet is a major center for desert tourism and a vital logistical hub near the borders with Libya and Niger.
